A prominent ethical issue within intercollegiate athletics is finding the right balance between academics and athletics. While NCAA’s mission is “to be an integral part of higher education and to focus on the development of our student-athletes,” many coaches and administrators lose sight of this aspect due to intercollegiate athletics’ natural competitive atmosphere. Student-athlete development programs have been implemented across NCAA institutions to assist in professional and personal growth and aid in preparing for college and post-collegiate careers. Events, conversations, workshops, community work, and more are incorporated into programs to prepare student-athletes to be exceptional stewards, students, and future leaders.

Tess' special project throughout this internship was to propose a 4-year development program to assist in the holistic development of student-athletes. Working and learning from Paul Ressa, she conducted extensive research on areas that Coastal Football coaches and staff believes needs strengthening and improvement in. Utilizing prior research knowledge and experience specifically in student-athlete development, Tess successfully presented an effective and thorough program that will assist in increasing pre/post-collegiate readiness and athletic and academic success.
