Legal Issues in Sport

This course, led by Dr. Locvich, was designed to introduce sport management students to legal principles they may deal with in managerial situations that often arise in sport industry settings. The course was based on traditional legal theories as applied to managerial functions: (1) human resource management, (2) operations management, and (3) marketing management. The primary project, the case analysis project, within this course was to break down a legal sport-related case and present to professors and students how sport managers can learn the issue(s).

Mayer v Belichick, The NFL, and the Patriots

A case law emphasizing the need and importance of ethical and moral decision-making in sport.

01

Case Proposal

We had to submit a copy of our chosen case along with a summary and justification for its relevance to our career path and interest for approval.

02

Case Brief

This was a paper summarizing/analyzing the approved case in a rigidly structured format commonly used in legal education. Emphasis was on demonstrating understanding and analysis of the legal aspects of the case (i.e., what legal information a lawyer could gain from this case).

03

Business Memo

This was a short informative business memo about summarizing/analyzing the approved case. The focus was on demonstrating the application of the case to the management of the sport industry (i.e., how a sport manager can utilize this case to inform their management).

04

Case Presentation

Finally, we were instructed to create a PowerPoint and present our findings to fellow peers and professors.
